ART SHOW OPENS AT YARD DOG DECEMBER 3, 2010

Visualize a party: Beer, a little music, hip people and naked women covering the walls. This is what you will find at Yard Dog, that super hip gallery on South Congress Avenue in Austin, when my show opens on FRIDAY, DECEMBER 3, at 7 PM.

Here are some of the pieces you will see by me. My “COLORFUL WOMEN” show opens Friday, December 3.

Ah, yes, on Sunday, November 7, 5-7 PM, come to BookPeople for the Austin publication party for LONE STAR NOIR, a fabulous anthology of crime fiction by Texas authors like… yours truly, plus James Crumley, Joe Lansdale, Bobby Byrd, Tim Tingle, Sarah Cortez, George Weir, and many, many more. This is the latest in the Akashic “Noir” anthology series. Edited by the supercool Bobby & Johnny Byrd of Cinco Puntos fame. There will be beer, authors, a little music (as in murder ballads, by, uh, yours truly) and other cool stuff.

Apologize for what? Will you please repeat that…?

‎”Mommy? There’s a weird lady on the phone asking you if you’ll apologize for being sexually harassed by her husband…”

Virginia Thomas, wife of Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas, is a Tea Party activist.

She looks kind of like the average middle aged gal you might see waddling out of a big-ass SUV at the shopping mall. She’s mad as hell and she wants to “take our country back…” and all that boilerplate right wing nonsense you keep hearing from the extreme right wing and let me add, the right wing bigots and rich fat cats who are financing all this nonsense which, coincidentally, always seems to emerge from the dark corners of society during times of economic turmoil and uncertainty. Racism, race-baiting, us-vs-them mentality, and the idea that “my life would be a whole lot better if ‘THEY’ weren’t taking all my tax money and causing all the crime and unemployment and being so lazy and shiftless…”

Flash back to 1991: So anxious were the right wing GOP to have a Supreme Court justice on their side, the GOP seized upon the idea to nominate a black man who happened to hold their super conservative views, but who was unqualified for the job in a number of crucial aspects. Plus, the nominee, Clarence Thomas, had sexually harassed colleagues in the past. Anita Hill, who worked with Thomas at the Department of Education and the EEOC, was forced to testify at his confirmation hearings. Anita Hill’s story was truthful, sincere and unbreakable. So the right wing demagogues did what they had to do: they tried to discredit her in the most balefully sexist manner anyone has seen since the Dark Ages.

Now, decades later, with their brand of racism and corporate-funded mob fanaticism on the rise, Virginia Hill felt emboldened enough to call up Anita Hill and leave a bizarre message on her voice mail, asking her to apologize for speaking the truth about her husband.

All this would be extremely bizarre even if Clarence and Virginia Thomas were both white. Anyway, it’s bizarre, even without Virginia’s funny hat.

DON’T FORGET: The opening of my first art show, “Colorful Women,” is FRIDAY, December 3, 2010, at Yard Dog, 1510 S. Congress Ave, Austin, Texas.

GLENN BECK ON CRACK

BARKING MAD…

First thing I read in the Sunday NY Times was the cover story on the magazine, Being Glenn Beck. There he is, chipmunk cheeks and all, the big crybaby, national liar no. 1. I wanted to get it over with.

a k a Mister Crybaby

Now, this guy is barking mad, no doubt about it, and I find him very dull. All he does is make things up, pretending to use logic and deduction to develop ideas and conclusions, but he’s really just breaking down in public. Think of Britney Spears. Remember how fascinated everyone was with her very public mental breakdown? It wasn’t cool, but it was great TV and the digital media took to it like fire to gasoline.

A lot of decibels and special effects signifying nothing? In GB’s case, not quite.

I think there are strong parallels between the national convulsive obsessions with celebrity meltdowns in public & the phenomenon of GB’s rabid base of support. We’re experiencing a wave of mass hysteria that is in tune with Beck’s mental unraveling. He claims to be a recovering alcoholic & “former dirtbag” but he is obviously still totally mentally unbalanced, as proven by his pathological lying and spreading of myth & libelous falsehoods. It’s as if those millions of fans of his are all taking a hit of crack at the same moment he does, and the same crap erupts from their skulls.

LIAR, LIARS

I hate to bring up Hitler, since GB & the righties are constantly wetting themselves with comparisons of Mr. Mustache, Stalin, Lenin, Mao, etc. to our fine President Barack Obama. None of which make any sense at all, particularly if one has a ninth grade education or the simple ability to look up and absorb any informative accounts of fascism, socialism, etc. The tactic they have adopted is “Tell the biggest lie you can think of, not just an exaggeration, and people will be so stunned they will tend to believe it… or at least, a few of the weak-minded will do so. And once that starts, it’s contagious. Because, let’s face it, panic is one way to escape the doldrums of your daily life.

THE EXPLODING TALKING HEADS

Sarah Palin is another one of these characters, along with Sharon Angle, Christine O’Donnell, Carl Palodino and, here in Texas (it’s hard, really hard to pick just one, but this one comes to mind) Dr. Donna Campbell, who are not only over-the-edge right wing meanies, but who genuinely seem to need psychological help. Watching them, one truly expects them to begin barking and biting people at any moment, and THAT is probably one of the big keys to their success.

FOX IS WORRIED, WORRIED…

Anyway, that’s what I got out of the NYT Magazine piece. It could have been a lot more cutting. It was interesting to learn, as the article states, that many inside Faux News are actually embarrassed by GB and they worry that it damages the network’s “credibility.” Go ahead, smile when you read that, especially when the word “credibility” appears in close proximity to Faux News. I did.

PS. I just found Wednesday’s (Oct. 29) Village Voice, which says all the above much better than I could. See WHITE AMERICA HAS LOST ITS MIND.

Live Music Austin Downtown 9.23.10

Here are some clips from the Khabele School music department fundraiser, held at the Omni Hotel downtown on Sept. 23, 2010. We had performances from all the ensembles of Khabele School and solo performances, too. This school has a very outstanding music department as you can see in these clips. I organized the last set, which incorporated performances from the choir, high school jazz ensemble and the Khabele All-Stars. The first song, “Run Sinner Run” features vocals from the choir, with Grant Sides on bass, Sam Kanoff on guitar and Phil Bridges on drums. Chelsea Toler is the first of the choir to sing and she also accompanied me on the whole set.

We got to do several of my favorite songs, including “If There Was,” which happens to be one that I wrote. The great Terri Lord joins us here on drums.

The first time I heard “Feeling Good” by Nina Simone, I cried. This one is a duet with the fabulous Chelsea Toler, who attended Berkelee School of Music this summer.

Sean Toler and Lois Richwine organized the show and Marshall Escamilla & Marc Lionetti, of Khabele School, are the music instructors for these talented students. Here we do another of my favorite songs, “Goin Down Slow,” written by Willie Dixon for Howlin Wolf. Jon Dee on Guitar and unexpectedly, Luke Pharr joins us on piano. Luke is one of the many outstanding musicians at the Khabele School. My son, Dashiell Sublett, is one of them, and he joined us on the last three songs, but that video has not been uploaded to youtube yet. I’ll add it later if/when that happens.

The benefit was a big success and a great time was had by all. Thanks to Gary Pharr for shooting the video. Thanks to Bob Widenhof for doing the sound. Thanks to everybody for pitching in and contributing in all the various ways. Other than the Howlin Wolf birthday show I did in June, this was my favorite gig of the year.
