MATA HARI BLOG #7

This is #7 of a series. There was no six, because there were two #4s. Tonight’s Mata Hari’s are mostly by the photographer Paul Boyer. I may have posted a couple of these before, but I don’t get tired of looking at them so why should you?

Her real name, more or less, was Margaretha Geertruida Zelle MacLeod. Her friends called her Grietje. Odds are about a million to one that you only know her as Mata Hari, and that’s OK.

She was a courtesan and an exotic dancer and a spy. She led an exotic but uniquely tragic life. The Wiki site readordie has a really good page on her Wiki.

And my first art show will open at Yard Dog in Austin FRIDAY, DECEMBER 3, 2010. There will be drinks, murder ballads and naked women. Did I mention art? Art will be there, too. Cheers, Jesse

ART BLOG #19

We went to Chicago last week with the Khabele School high school jazz band. Great trip. Some of these drawings were done on the trip. We stayed at the W hotel on West Adams, went to Columbia to sit in on some working sessions with the jazz band and also sat in while some singers performed for an American Idol-style evaluation by vocal instructors. A couple of them were pretty good but one was really bad. The jazz band was phenomenal. Also went to Andy’s Jazz club, great band there, forgot the name, but the bassist used to play with a guy who played with Charlie Parker. The band played a gig Saturday night. We had deep dish pizza at Gino’s and hot dogs and went to the Art Institute. I spent an extra couple of hours there on my own and barely scratched the surface. It’s a hell of a museum.

ART BLOG #4: RICARDO ACEVEDO

Wendy, by Ricardo Acevedo, "What the Wind Blew In"]Ricardo Acevedo is one of the best, most exciting, prolific and underrated artists in Austin, Texas. Not just because he took the photo on my header. He does amazing things with images of women, people in clubs and raw urban spaces. He excels at the thing that photography does best: capturing split second of time and space in such a way that it sucks you in and demands your attention, evokes mystery, confusion, wonder. For now I’m just posting a link to his main RAWORKS site, but will post more later. See his photo of the lovely Wendy, an Austin makeup artist and musician, one of the first photos of his that caught my attention, and the <a href="“>Howlin’ Wolf poster he produced for my Howlin’ Wolf Birthday Tribute show at the Continental Club last June.
"Working Women," one of many pictures by Ricardo that would make a great Bryan Ferry cover.

ART BLOG 3: THE BIKE WRECK

Some new pix from the weekend in the new Little Black Book, which is actually red, because Jerry’s was out of the black. As you can see, I’m starting to use some metallic ink, too. So these are a little experimental… wait, strike that, it’s all experimental. Jesus, it’s not like I really know what I’m doing. Ah yes, thank you, Aaron Reed, for buying the date series, pictured below.

What supremely good taste! By the way, I’m a big fan of Aaron’s WaterWilderness blog, and the Abilene Trail Chronicles, too, and when you see his photography, you’ll see why I’m honored that he likes my work.

UPDATE: This post was titled The Bike Wreck because, originally, I posted one of several drawings of that title, depicting a woman wrecking her bicycle. But somehow that drawing disappeared from this post, and I’m having trouble finding the scan. It’s a mystery.

Todd Wolfson, Public Eye

Normally, you hear the words “bike wreck” and you expect some road rash, occasionally a bit of amnesia from a head wound, but Austin’s mean streets (perpetually under construction, it seems) were the site this summer of a bike spill that nearly ended the career of one of the most dependable and vividly artistic chroniclers of the city’s world-renowned music and arts scene. A leisurely cruise on July 11 turned into a Frankenstein movie for our beloved photographer, Todd V. Wolfson, when his front wheel hit a small black hole in the pavement universe and he was catapulted over the handlebars. His forehead took some of the impact but the worst of it was his elbow, so elaborately smashed that the surgeon declared it to be absolutely one of the worst cases he had ever encountered. The elbow joint was split in half and there were two other compound fractures. We all know how hard-headed Toddy is, so the eleven stitches required should come as something of a shock as well. How many needles were broken during the suturing we were not told.

Toddy suffered internal injuries, too, but let’s get to the point, since they turned out to not be life threatening. His arm was put back together with the help of 16 (that’s right, sixteen) metal pins, and the whole right limb encased in a strange, sci-fi type brace with an adjustable elbow hinge on it, which makes him look like the offspring of a soap opera star and RoboCop. Or Son of Frankenstein, maybe.

Did we mention the staggering medical bills? Enough to gag a maggot, to scare a buzzard off a gut wagon. Then there’s the painful road of rehabilitation and therapy so that he may regain some percentage of the use of his right elbow again.

Yes, even a hack photographer needs two arms to do his magic, and Toddy is no hack. He needs help.

For the past 30 years, Todd V. Wolfson has been one of the keenest eyes of the Austin music scene. The list of Austin artists he has worked with runs the alphabetical gamut from A for Alejandro to Z (Although I can’t think of any Z-bands at the moment). We need him back in action and we need your help.

Therefore, a big party to raise money. Yes, I’m on the bill, playing with my colleague of the past 31 years, Jon Dee Graham. We’ll be doing our murder ballad set. But there are many other great artists. The list of confirmed artists is at the end of this post.

Included here are the photos Todd did for the jacket of my last book (Never the Same Again: A Rock N’ Roll Gothic) and the photo for the induction of The Skunks 2008 to the Austin Music Hall of Fame, also one of a recent visit to bring him some of Lois’ home cooking. I know it helped put me back together many times over the years we’ve been together. When Todd sends me pix of his robo-arm, I will post those here, too. If you are a friend of his on FaceBook, you can find them yourself.

The show will be on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at Antone’s nightclub in Austin. Go to Putting Todd Back Together to buy tickets online and find more info or even donate money online.
